A One-Day Course for Beginners

Curious about honey bees or thinking about starting your own hive? This friendly, theory-based course is the perfect introduction to the world of beekeeping. Designed especially for beginners, no prior knowledge or experience is required.

Led by John Shepherd, an experienced beekeeper and smallholder with over 40 years of experience, the course will help you understand the fascinating lifecycle of the honey bee and the fundamentals of keeping a healthy hive. You’ll also learn about the essential equipment you’ll need and what’s involved through the beekeeping year.

To ensure plenty of time for questions and discussion, places are limited.

During the day, you’ll learn about:

  • How to identify honey bees
  • Different types of beehives and how they work
  • The parts of a hive and their role
  • The lifecycle of the honey bee
  • The hive year – what to do and when
  • Honey extraction
  • Bee welfare and health
  • Common problems and how to manage them

Please bring a packed lunch for the day. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Whether you’re ready to start your own hive or simply want to learn more about these incredible pollinators, you’ll leave with the confidence and knowledge to take your first steps into beekeeping.

There will be an observation hive on display to help relate the theory to practice.
