Our countryside and gardens are home to a number of elusive small mammals.
We often only catch a glimpse before they've disappeared into the undergrowth, but living in burrows and nests, there are mice, voles, shrews and other small, furry creatures that form an important part of our ecosystem.
This session is suitable for complete beginners as well as enthusiasts. You will be guided to use recognised survey techniques to conduct a survey of the small mammals caught inside (humane) traps, that will be set up the evening before. Of course we hope to find mammals, but please bear in mind that this is a scientific survey monitoring the species onsite, so sometimes we don't find anything! You will learn basic ID skills to recognise some common small mammals, and well as information on their ecology.
This session will be led by Heather Clayson, our Citizen Science and Nature Programmes Coordinator, who has a background in professional ecology surveying including a range of mammal species and holds a dormouse survey licence.
Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy boots/wellies. Feel free to bring a flask!
Please be aware that the timings for this event are a guide, and will be led by interest and what's found on the day!
