Can you volunteer some time to help create the new 'no dig' growing beds in our new Community Garden?

You may have heard we are building a new Community Garden at Bore Place - watch a brief overview of the project here. After a fantastic response to our call for help planting the orchard, we’re now moving into the next phase: creating new no-dig growing beds. Join us for for a hands-on volunteer day to help shape this new space from the ground up.

We’ll be creating new growing beds using the no-dig method - an approach that works with the soil rather than disturbing it. You may have heard of no-dig as an alternative to traditional double digging; this is a great opportunity to learn what it involves and to put it into practice together.

No-dig beds support healthier soil by leaving micro-organisms, fungi and worms undisturbed, improving soil structure and long-term fertility. Charles Dowding is a well-known advocate of the no-dig method and has videos about it on his YouTube channel. We’re planning a mix of different bed types in the Community Garden, and this session will play an important role in establishing them.

We’re delighted to be joined by friends from Lynsted Community Kitchen Garden near Faversham, who will be sharing their experience and helping us get set up. They began a similar community garden around five years ago and bring a wealth of practical knowledge. You can also find out about their garden on Instagram.

No previous knowledge or experience is needed - come and learn alongside us! Families are very welcome (children aged 8+), and we'll start with an introduction and briefing, before getting stuck in. A vegetarian and vegan lunch will be provided for everyone as a thank you for volunteering your time to support the Community Garden!

Important info:

  • Please arrive at 9:45am ready for the 10am briefing.
  • Please dress for the weather - we recommend layers! - and wear sturdy boots (steel-toe caps if you have them)

  • Please don't bring your own tools - all will be provided, but please do bring gardening gloves, if you have them (we have limited spares).
  • Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
