Twilight talking around British Values with local teachers

Posted by Sue

SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural development) and British Values were the topic of conversation at our recent twilight session with teachers from local schools - Weald Primary School, Mereworth Primary School, Sevenoaks Primary School and Four Elms Primary School.

The Department of Education now requires all schools in England to show how well their pupils develop in SMSC and, that British values are promoted via SMSC. This twilight session explored how teachers might achieve this using Global Citizenship activities, as well as through class discussion and debates.

During the session teachers also had an opportunity to try out a variety of activities from How Do We Know It’s Working? a new free resource for teachers to measure the effect of their teaching around a variety of Global Citizenship topics.

The resource has been developed through a consortium of education centres in the UK and Ireland, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Ethiopia, and funded by the EU. As part of the dissemination of this new resource, Commonwork education team is offering free Twilight sessions for local schools, along with a free copy of the resource. As well as being a useful tool to begin introducing SMSC and British values into your teaching, it can also help you to evaluate your lesson plans and assess learning outcomes.

If you would like to arrange a session for your school please contact Becky Baldock for further information beckyb@commonwork.org 01732 463255.
