Zowie Martin is a British Wheel of Yoga teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience and additional training in Pregnancy Yoga and Mindfulness. Zowie lives on-site at Bore Place and is available for group yoga sessions, 121 lessons and Thai yoga massage.
Her approach combines mindfulness techniques of focusing on the breath, bodily sensations and mental activity with yoga asana for a slow-paced meditative practice, inclusive and suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
Thai Yoga Massage
Traditional Thai Massage also called Thai Yoga Massage has its roots in the Indian systems of Yoga and Ayurveda. It was developed 2500 years ago by Jivaka Kumar Baccha, the physician to the Buddha. Around 2000 years ago Thai Massage was brought from India to Thailand along with Buddhism and mostly practiced in Thai Buddhist temples.
Thai Yoga Massage is done on a firm futon on the floor with the patient dressed in comfortable clothes. Typically a session lasts 2 hours.
The practitioner uses thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet to apply a combination of acupressure, gentle rocking and twisting, joint and spine mobilizations and assisted yoga stretches, with the therapist using bodyweight and a steady and meditative rhythm. Its primary aim being to restore and balance the body’s energy system, focusing on energy lines called “sen”.
By freeing the flow of vital energy in the body, Thai Massage can improve posture, low back pain, breathing, flexibility, digestion and circulation. Muscles are stretched, inner organs toned, and emotional and nervous tension reduced. A deep sense of relaxation can be experienced during and after a treatment.
