A one-day introduction to keeping your own hive

If you’re considering starting up a hive or you’re just curious about honey bees and what’s involved with keeping them, this informal course provides an excellent introduction to the world of beekeeping. The course is designed for beginners, so no previous experience or knowledge is required.

Led by John Shepherd, an experienced beekeeper and smallholder, the course will help you understand the lifecycle of the bee and the basics of beekeeping, including the equipment you will need to get going. Places are limited to ensure there is plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.

The course will cover:

  • The identification of honey bees
  • Different types of beehives
  • The parts of a hive and their role
  • The lifecycle of the honey bee
  • The hive year (and what to do when)
  • Honey extraction
  • Welfare and health
  • Common problems and how to manage them

There will be an observation hive on display to help relate the theory to practice.

A light lunch will be provided along with tea and coffee. Please note any dietary requirements at the time of booking.

Please arrive at 9:45am for tea/coffee, for a 10:00am start.
